A Member of
Parliament since 1998, Carmel was elected Deputy Premier of NSW in
September 2008. Carmel has the unique experience of serving as a Member in both
the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly, where she has been the
Member for Marrickville since 2005. In addition to her role as Deputy Premier,
Carmel is also the Minister for Climate Change and the Environment and the
Minister for Commerce.

Carmel has a long held passion for the environment which, along with social
justice issues, brought her to politics in the first place. She is delighted to
have the opportunity to serve as the State's Environment Minister at such a
critical time in the portfolio.
With a long history of delivering substantial reforms in her previous portfolios
of Education, Community Services and Disability Services, Youth and Juvenile
Justice, Carmel will deliver on the Rees Government's environment agenda.
Carmel has an Economics degree from Sydney University and lives in Marrickville
with her husband and son, Nathan. Before entering Parliament, Carmel was Deputy
Mayor of Marrickville Council. |
