Alice Springs High School

"We have a high proportion of Indigenous students - 40%.  For many
English is a second language. This can substantially delay their educational progress."

At the start of Year 7, reading and comprehension levels are assessed. Students who are two or more years below the required literacy level are placed into reading recovery.

The program
The Reading Recovery program supports the work being undertaken in the classroom and focuses on 'plugging the gaps' in the student's education. Funding is taken from the humanities "bucket" as it is seen as an essential factor for secondary school success.
There is not enough material to go around in the Reading Recovery program. ESL modified novels are also needed for the classroom to enable lower literacy level students to participate in class activities but read at their own pace and level. Finding engaging readers for this age group is difficult.
The Results
The Dymocks Children's Charities is proud to help source engaging readers and provide funding for the purchase of appropriately modified texts, novels and Indij Readers.
