Indij Readers. For Little Fullas. For Big Fullas.

"The 11 books published so far are a treasure trove.  Their publication is
an occasion with the potential to turn around the lives of many readers."

Her Excellency Marie Bashir AC, Governor of New South Wales, 2003

Indij Readers consist of 3 series of culturally appropriate, contemporary Indigenous classroom readers, written to help address the serious gap that exists between Indigenous and non-Indigenous literacy levels. Since the publication of Series 1 (11 books and a Teachers' Guide) in 2003, more titles have been added. Series 2, published in 2004, includes 9 books (6 titles also available in big book format), a Teachers' Guide, an audio CD (raps) and a 10 minute film. Series 3, published in 2007, includes 9 books and a Teachers' Guide. Building upon the success of Indij Readers, there are plans to develop a Community Writers' Kit in 2009.

The readers are significant because the stories have been gathered using extensive consultations with Indigenous Elders and communities. The back of each book features the author and illustrator, further empowering Indigenous children to meet literacy and general education challenges. The Teachers' Guides contain many methods for addressing literacy building upon the Indigenous focus, including cultural notes, guided reading lesson plans and blackline masters.

The results
The need for culturally appropriate text is strong but there is little available. The Dymocks Children's Charities is proud to promote the distribution of the Indij Readers and Teachers' Guides.
