In August 2001, Mr Bob Carr, the then Premier of NSW launched
the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge. The programs aim was to encourage young people’s
interest in reading. The initial program was focused at students in years 5 – 8
but has subsequently been expanded to target students from Kindergarten to Year
9.

|
The Program |
Students are challenged to read 20-30 books in one year,
at least 15 of which must come from a Premier’s Reading Challenge list compiled
by teachers, authors and publishers. The books are selected by a committee comprising
of representatives from the Australian Society of Authors, Teacher Librarians, the
Board of Studies and the English Teachers' Association.

Partnership |
|
In 2003 Dymocks Children’s Charities (formerly Dymocks
Literacy Foundation) came on board as the Principal Partner for the Premier’s reading
Challenge and has continued to be the major supporter of this innovative program.
To quote Mr Carr “there is no doubt that without the on-going support from Dymocks
Children’s Charities, the Premiers Reading Challenge could not have continued” |
|
In the first year, 5,900 students successfully completed
the challenge. Last year, more than 180,000 students from almost 2,000 schools successfully
completed the challenge. This involved the reading of well over 4,834,000 books!
