Reading Tips
Your teenager has a lot of competing interests and may not make reading a priority. Between their active social lives and extracurricular activities, it's not surprising some teenagers become less regular readers.

Here are some useful tips to help turn your teenager into a lifelong reader!
  • Set an example. Let your kids see you reading for pleasure.
  • Leave materials including books, magazines, and newspapers around the house for everyone in the family to share.
  • Visit a Dymocks bookstore or library with your teenager when you are out shopping together.
  • Buy books about a subject that your child likes – for example a book that features their favourite sports teams, music interest, hobbies, or TV shows. Give a gift subscription to a special interest magazine.
  • Share a joke book with your teenager, everyone loves to laugh!
  • Motivation is key, make reading aloud a natural part of family life. Share an article from the paper, a poem, a letter, or a random page from an encyclopaedia--without turning it into a lesson.
  • Try to make friends with one particular librarian and one particular bookseller so they can get to know your child and suggest the perfect reading material.
