Bringing Books to Life at Shalvey Public School

At Shalvey Public School in NSW, more than 245 students attend a school serving a community facing significant social and economic challenges. For many children, access to books that spark joy, curiosity and imagination is limited. That’s where Dymocks Children’s Charities steps in, helping children discover stories they love and build a lifelong relationship with reading.

Since 2020, we’ve proudly supported Shalvey Public School through our Book Bank program, ensuring students can choose from a wide range of books tailored to their interests. We've also partnered with the school to regenerate their library, transforming it into a welcoming, vibrant space where children can explore and enjoy stories.

During our recent visit, we were joined by our wonderful Ambassador, Jacqueline Harvey, whose passion for storytelling filled the room! As she spoke with students about reading, creativity, and the power of imagination, the energy was unmistakable. The children eagerly to shared their thoughts, and favourite stories, an experience that truly reinforced why access to literature is so important.

Moments like these sit as the heart of our work. When children are given access to books, and the freedom to choose them, something powerful happens. Confidence grows. Curiosity is sparked. And reading becomes a joy, not obligation.

We are incredibly grateful to the Shalvey PS community for welcoming us, and to our Jacqueline Harvey for sharing her time and passion so generously. Together, we are helping ensure that every child has the chance to fall in love with a book and unlock a lifetime of possibilities.
