Every Child. Every Island.
Every Torres Strait Community.
Access to Books.
Dymocks Children’s Charities is proud to share the work underway to improve literacy outcomes for children across the Torres Strait.
Working alongside schools and communities across the region, including Tagai State College, we are helping more children access quality books and literacy opportunities, regardless of where they live.
Every child deserves the opportunity to discover the joy of reading.
Across the Torres Strait, children grow up in vibrant island and coastal communities with rich cultures, strong family connections and deep traditions of storytelling. While many communities are separated by sea, they are connected through culture, language and a shared sense of belonging.
Supporting Torres Strait Communities
The Torres Strait stretches across more than 200 islands between Cape York and Papua New Guinea, with communities located across both islands and the mainland. Distance, weather and freight can all affect how easily schools access books and learning resources.
School libraries play an important role in creating spaces where children can read, learn, imagine and explore ideas while seeing their own stories, cultures and experiences reflected in the books around them.
What we’re delivering
Dymocks Children’s Charities is supporting children across the Torres Strait through our Book Bank and Library Regeneration programs, including more than 2,000 students across Tagai State College’s 17 campuses.
This work also extends to other schools and communities across the Torres Strait, helping more children access brand-new books at school and at home.
Our Commitment
We believe where a child lives should never determine their access to books and literacy opportunities.
That’s why we’re committed to working alongside schools and communities across the Torres Strait, providing brand-new books and literacy resources to help strengthen school libraries and support children on their reading journey.
Our vision is simple: every child, on every island and in every Torres Strait community, should have access to quality books and the opportunity to discover the joy of reading.
This is the beginning of a long-term commitment to improving access to books and literacy opportunities across the Torres Strait.
Follow the Journey
Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing stories from schools, communities, volunteers and partners as this work continues across the Torres Strait.
