That’s a Wrap: Great Debate 2026

Two decades in, the Great Debate continues to prove that a room full of big ideas (and even bigger personalities) can change lives.

Our community came together to celebrate the 20th Annual Great Debate Gala, an evening that was equal parts sharp, nostalgic, and deeply meaningful, all in support of improving literacy outcomes for children across Australia.

Thanks to the generosity in the room, we raised over $360,000 on the night. Over the past 20 years, the Great Debate has now collectively raised more than $4 million towards providing brand-new books to children who need them most. It’s support like this that turns a single evening into lasting impact, helping young readers build confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Taking on the bold (and surprisingly controversial) topic “It was better in 2006”, this year’s debate delivered plenty of unexpected moments. In a twist, long-time captain Adam Spencer crossed the floor to join the negative team, arguing that the Great Debate is making an even greater impact in 2026 than it did in 2006.

When it came time to decide, the audience had the final say. In the end, the affirmative team, made up now of only Dan Ilic and Rosie Waterland, took home the win.

A huge thank you to our incredible debaters, Adam Spencer, Dan Ilic, Mia Freeland, R.A. Spratt, Rob Carlton, and Rosie Waterland, for bringing energy, wit, and plenty of laughs to the stage.

This year also marked the end of an era, with Adam and Rob taking to the stage together for the final time after 20 years of championing this event. Their contribution has been nothing short of extraordinary, helping shape the Great Debate into the much-loved night it is today.

Some of the most memorable moments came from the students of Villawood North Public School, who shared the books they love, a simple but powerful reminder of why access to stories matters. Principal Cathy Wilton reinforced this impact, reflecting on the difference these programs make in her school community.

A big thank you to our MC, Kylie Gillies, who guided the evening with warmth and ease, and to the incredible Westpac volunteers who have supported this event behind the scenes for so many years.

We’re also deeply grateful to our event partners, B Dynamic Logistics, Dymocks, and Top Print, for helping bring the night to life.

And to everyone who generously donated prizes, your support played a vital role in making the evening such a success.

Because at its core, the Great Debate isn’t just about who wins on stage, it’s about making sure more children across Australia have the opportunity to read, learn, and thrive.

You can still make a difference! Help deliver the gift of literacy for disadvantaged children across Australia by making a donation here.
