Why Literacy Matters: The Difference We Can Make Together

Dymocks Children’s Charities recently brought together educators, corporate partners and supporters for a special breakfast in Sydney to explore the importance of literacy and the difference we can make when we work together.

The morning featured a panel discussion with Katherine Zerounian, Principal of Redfern Jarjum College; Melanie Smith, General Manager of Dymocks Children’s Charities; Nicola Stokes, CEO of AMP Foundation; and Rebecca Iliffe, Director and Founder of Turnstone Projects.

Together, they shared their perspectives on the challenges facing Australian schools, the importance of access to books and literacy resources, and the role collaboration plays in creating meaningful opportunities for children.

As Katherine reflected during the discussion:

“Literacy is more than just learning to read and write. What sits alongside that is the independence, the confidence, the opportunity that opens up and that ability to choose.”

Her words captured a key theme of the morning: literacy extends far beyond the classroom. It empowers children with the confidence to learn, participate and pursue opportunities throughout their lives.

The discussion also reinforced the importance of partnerships between schools, community organisations, corporate supporters and charities in helping more children access the books and resources they need to thrive.

We extend our sincere thanks to our panellists, everyone who joined for the event, and AMP Foundation for their generous support in making the event possible.

Let's keep the conversation going. If your organisation is interested in supporting children's literacy through partnerships, volunteering, fundraising or workplace giving, we'd love to hear how we can make a difference together.
